Barbara Stanwyck at BAM

Published by Erin under Downtown Brooklyn, Film, Fort Greene

Sjff_03_img1355
This weather has me feeling a little gloomy (as does the postponement of ballfield chow),
but what better way to kick a funk than a movie by the pluckiest of
plucky Golden Age actors: Barbara Stanwyck. She’s pretty much my
favorite actress of all time–tough, smart, down-to-earth, and funny as
hell. Now until May 6th, BAM
is doing a retrospective of some of her best flicks. If I had to choose
two favorites, I’d go with the gangster’s moll vs. uppity professors
comedy, Ball of Fire (Saturday), and her last movie, the Night Walker (Sun, May 6), a so-bad-its-great William Castle quickie about a woman haunted by her dead husband.

Subway Reads: Poem in Your Pocket

Published by Erin under Arts, Books, Creative, Culture, Events

Pocket_3Put a Poem in Your Pocket

One good reason to get out of bed this rainy Friday: the magic of alliteration.

National Poetry Month winds down this weekend, and to bid a fond farewell, the city of New York has teamed up with a bevy of august organizations to get poetry out into the streets (or, at least into a certain Manhattan park). Bring a poem to the Bryant Park reading room any time today and receive a free book of poetry.  Students can participate in an open mic all afternoon.

Poem in Your Pocket Day
Friday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bryant Park, 40th to 42nd  streets between 5th and 6th avenues

In my pocket today:

Meditation at Lagunitas by Robert Haas

All the new thinking is about loss.
In this it resembles all the old thinking.
The idea, for example, that each particular erases
the luminous clarity of a general idea. That the clown-
faced woodpecker probing the dead sculpted trunk
of that black birch is, by his presence,
some tragic falling off from a first world
of undivided light. Or the other notion that,
because there is in this world no one thing
to which the bramble of blackberry corresponds,
a word is elegy to what it signifies.
We talked about it late last night and in the voice
of my friend, there was a thin wire of grief, a tone
almost querulous. After a while I understood that
talking this way, everything desolves: justice
pine
, hair, woman, you and I. There was a woman
I made love to and I remembered how, holding
her small shoulders in my hands sometimes,
I felt a violent wonder at her presence
like a thirst for salt, for my childhood river
with its island willows, silly music from the pleasure boat,
muddy places where we caught the little orange-silver fish
called pumpkinseed. It hardly had to do with her.
Longing, we say, because desire is full
of endless distances. I must have been the same to her.
But I remember so much, the way her hands dismantled bread,
the thing her father said that hurt her, what
she dreamed. There are moments when the body is as numinous
as words. Days that are the good flesh continuing.
Such tenderness, those afternoons and evenings,
saying blackberry, blackberry, blackberry.

Tal_and_dekker
Yes folks, it’s that time again. This week at Skylab we have Dekker  and Tal, a former East Village Radio show host of "Electrobeef," mixing up a storm. Sputnik Bar is conveniently located  one block from the Classon Ave G Station, a mere 10min train ride from Williamsburg or Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens/Park Slope.

ABL:Radio – Barbicide – Mixed by Bethany

Published by Erin under Podcast

Barbicide_3
It feels like eons since Bethany last graced us with a mix. Since that time, she has steadily fed her vinyl addiction with more tantalizing Italo, euro-electro and dark disco records. This mix could’ve been a perfect soundtrack for that favorite classic anime, "Galaxy Express 999," a movie chock full of interesting androids, cyborgs and robots.

Regular ABL:Radio listeners will notice "Permanent Wave" by Brooklyn’s own Ladycréme around the beginning of the last half. Enjoy!

Update: Bethany pointed out that "A Cambria Heights Affair" is by another Brooklynite, Nick Chacona. I wonder if the track name is a hat-tip to 70’s Brooklyn disco/funk group Crown Heights Affair.

Oh Baby, It’s a Barbecue

Published by Erin under Food and Drink, Park Slope

Bbqfour

PJ Hanley’s got its barbecue out starting Sundays, and I just got an email that Flatbush Farm is holding not one but two barbecue celebrations this Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm. Not only will there be "savory meats" but also clams, veggies, corn bread and veggie chili. Flatbush Farm, of course, just happens to be right near the Botanic Gardens, which is holding its Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Fest this weekend. Two birds with one stone, I say.

Nacho Over Brooklyn

Published by Erin under Photoblog

Thanks to our friends M&A for taking this very Brooklyn photo on our friends’ rooftop. Spring in Brooklyn is great for chips, salsa, beer and rooftop parties. Cheers to a few more days of this weather!

ABL:Radio – When We Were Free – Mixed by Adam Smith

Published by Erin under Podcast

When_we_were_free Long time ago, there existed a place where people lived care-free — the only laws governing the land were four-four beats and mandatory dancing until sun rise. On our episode this week, Adam Smith celebrates this magical land with a tour of classic house and acid from 1986 to 1993. A few weeks back, two crates of old house records fell into his hands when a well known DJ has to hightail it out of New York. It took a while for Adam to prune the crap and unearth this pile of gems. We hope you enjoy the results!

Taste of Chinatown: Saturday

Published by Erin under Food and Drink

Greenteaballs

Saturday’s high according to Weather.com is 69 degrees, and from noon to 6 p.m., you can buy $1 dishes in Chinatown during Taste of Chinatown. Yum. Almost makes me forget I was going to be an organic gardening bunny this weekend. Decisions, decisions. Check out previous ABL Taste of Chinatown posts for 2005 and 2006.
