Heights Players: Into the Woods
Brooklyn Heights doesn't get much love around here. Sure, it's pretty, but when's the last time you actually went there to do anything? However, I'm curious about these Heights Players, who are currently putting on Sondheim's Into the Woods. It's not my favorite Sondheim score, but its touchy feely "You Are Not Alone" sentiment might just connect in the sleepy Heights. With so few theater options in Brooklyn, I'd love for this to turn out to be a diamond in the rough. Anyone heard anything?

Hello BeatsMe - I actually went last night to their opening night and it was really good. They got some really great singers. Definitely worth checking out for only 15 bucks...

Rapunzel's prince and PC were extraordinary in the performance I attended... Both young men are very talented and should be cast as leads in the future... BRAVO!
Blown away. Really.
I had never been to a production of the Heights Players. A surprise considering they are now in their 51st season (I asked the stage manager). Into the Woods was AMAZING. I had my doubts when the lobby filled with lots of elderly women with dyed red hair, but those doubts were soon thrown to the wolves (get it? Oh, I kill myself!) the moment folks started singing. This is one talented ensemble of around 20-25 people and there really wasn't a weak link in the bunch. Really top-notch singing, costumes, etc.
I'm now a diehard fan of the Heights Players and plan on going back again and again. How did I miss this?
This was especially amazing because I'd just seen "High Fidelity" on Broadway the night before and this blew it out of the water.

That is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed it. I shared this blog with the other's in the cast. Everyone was touched and very excited that people enjoyed the show.
I attended the second Saturday night with a friend. First time to the Heights Players, as my son is Rapunzel's Prince. I loved the WHOLE show! My friend and I laughed throughout the entire first act, noticing every little nuance by the actors; ie Cinderella's father sipping from his flask, the Baker's wife's mystified look when Jack is parting with his cow, Red's consumption of the bread and cookies. Fabulous ad libs from all.
I'm told the Witch comes up with a new comment every night when she is in the audience - delightful.
The set was stunning, the birds - what a surprise, the face in the tree - shocking, the men in the tree - great! Critique: didn't like the "head and shoulders" of the fallen giant - but how else to show her demise?
Costumes were spot on: two princes dressed similarly but different enough to show their individuality. Cow was fabulous, what a face. Scarf draped over Baker's wife shoulder, Jack's untucked shirt - so clever. LOVED the dark glasses on the step-sisters in Act 2. Critique: two gowns were not ironed, fold lines didn't fit with royalty.
Make up - WOW. The Witch, the Wolf!
Voices were phenomenal, perfect dance steps to include entire cast at the finale, great Direction to include all three sides of the "stage" to include all of the audience.

Saw the show last night and what I need to talk about is Cinderella. Let me just say that this girl blew me away in Act 2. Wasn't crazy about her in Act 1, but the second act was HERS. Her emoting, could not keep my eyes off her during "You Are Not Alone". And her voice was flawless in that song...she wasn't the same person she was in Act 1. I know this is kind of a mixed message and opinion on her, but she was the one I left the show thinking "wow". Congrats.
The show has closed and it saddens me. I had the honor of being the assistant director on the heights production. I have never in ten years at the Heights had the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast. Consider this a recomendation for any of these great actors and actresses. They are simply the best and I hope that I will have the opportunity to work with them again.
Finally the Director and I would like to thank those of you who have added to this blog with your kind words and encouragement. Knowing the show was well recieved is greatest holiday gift we could have recieved.
Just saw "DA" the Irish play at the Heights Player's over the weekend. Strong acting and well directed. I would recommend it.
