Groceries at Pathmark

| | Comments (9)

First, I must apologize for the lack of photos on the site. I've misplaced (lost?) my camera battery charger, and the battery is dead. It makes me very sad. I keep hoping I'll find it in the apartment, but I just might have to bite the bullet and buy another one.

Now, on to Pathmark. With the loss of the world's most poorly run Key Food on Court Street, which still hasn't turned into the promised drug store, the neighborhood had to find a new place to shop for groceries. Of course, we still patronize Sue and her natural foods mini-grocery, and on occasion we've stopped into that little grocery next door, which is only good for the very basics of basics (hmmm .... I think I need a can of tomato paste). But we've also started making the trek to Pathmark, known on the company's own website as Gowanus Pathmark. On our side of the neighborhood, it's not so far away.

You'd never know it was there, even if you're a frequent shopper at Lowe's, which shares a parking lot with the behemoth (Pathmark faces Hamilton). And it is a large grocery store. It's like stepping into the suburban grocery store of one's youth. Wide aisle, so many aisles that you could lose a child in there if you really wanted to. It still puts the veggies on Styrofoam trays, but at least the veggies are fresh. It also has an impressive selection of Latin food products--Latin cheeses, crema Mexicana, arepas-making stuff, wide selection of items from Goya.  And it's a good place to stock up on staples.

Of course, the vast majority of people there are stuffing their carts with extra-large bags of frozen chicken wings, so if you find bulk purchases of frozen meat products disturbing, you might want to stick with the Met Food on Henry.

In the 2 years I've been in the neighborhood, the MET on Smith has improved twofold. What once was a pretty run-down supermarket has really changed- better stock, organic vegetable and sundries section, specialty foods. They even extended their hours.

It's a good all-around options.

I have to admit that after years of living in NYC and shopping in my (small) neighborhood grocery, big grocery stores freak me out a little bit. Too many choices!! :)

the MET on smith really isn't all that bad in terms of selection (except for the eggs that i bought one time that, when cracked open, were a completely solid, gelatinous mass inside) but why, why, why does it smell so death-y in there?

I'm a Gowanus Pathmark advocate. I love the faux suburban-ness of it, though the clientele isn’t exactly suburban (I’ve seen more than one fight break out near the check out line). It was better when they had the dollar store next to the liquor store. Oh, and they have one of those Coinstar machines in front (though it's frequently out of service).

This Sunday is buy one get one free sundae day at Baskin Robbins (yeah, they stopped the annual free scoop deal). I’m tempted to check out the BR next to the Pathmark.

That Pathmark is a nightmare. The lines are always huge. Worse, though, is that their produce SUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKS. It inevitably goes rotten within days. We have given up on that place altogether. C-Town is our town, now.

I live in Red Hook and drive to that Pathmark which isn't terribly bad. It's much better than it used to be like 2 years ago. But in a few short weeks I can happily and joyfully say goodbuy to driving or taking the bus to the supermarket when Fairway opens. Hallelujah!!!

I definitely will be biking to redhook more when Fairway opens.

The Met food on Smith always smells like cat piss, and has for the 10 yrs I've been in the nabe. I went once to the Pathmark, and I was afraid for my life - and I grew up in NYC at it's worst. Take a stroll down to the met on henry street. They are great and they deliver.
