World’s Best Hummus
I do not toss around the phrase, "world’s best hummus" lightly, but Sabra really is the best store-bought hummus I’ve ever tasted. Everyone I’ve recommended it to (and there have been plenty of recommendations along the way) has loved it. And it’s a local brand, distributed by Blue and White Food Corp in Astoria, New York. The creamy, tasty, addicting, dinner-killing hummus comes in a wide variety of types: classic, tahini, roasted garlic, spicy, etc., and each of them is better than the next. Two places in the neighborhood to purchase: at the natural foods store on Court Street between 3rd and 4th Place, and at Key Food on Atlantic (where they have an entire refrigerated case devoted to all the different kinds of hummus–I’d also like to take this opportunity to say what’s up with that Key Food not having a chip aisle–crazy!). Enjoy the weekend with a big bowlful of hummus.

it’s true. after a lecture from a very nice friend just back from israel on how americans really don’t get good hummus, i casually mentioned my cravings for Sabra. his eyes lit up -i knew about Sabra? according to him, the closest you can get to the real thing.
That stuff is more addictive than crack.
i agree, it’s awesome and I eat it by the bucket. also, you can buy it at the Key Foods on Court Street near corner video — it’s overall a gross key foods, but it does have a good selection of sabra in the same cooler as the milk and eggs.
I’ve noticed sabra seems to be (rightfully) taking over the hummus isle at every store I go to. The secret to the crackness is massive amounts of fat. I compared the label to french onion dip, and the onion dip won. That said, I probably empty a little vat of sabra every other day or so…
agreed. this stuff is incredible. it couldn’t be good for you.
All the fat appears to be from the Canola Oil. There are definitely no trans-fats in Sabra. I didn’t see any obnoxious fillers or preservatives.
thanks for the tip! always looking for good hummus!
We had two different flavors of this hummus in West Palm Beach-it was at the Publix. It was the best hummus I have ever had and I even went to chef school!
Sabra has taken over my life. I eat it so often I might as well have an intervenous tube connected to the vat.
You obviously haven’t tasted Bobbi’s Hummus. It’s made in Philly and kicks Sabra’s ass all the way down Broadway. And unlike Sabra, Bobbi’s doesn’t have ANY preservatives. Just check it out and fall in love.
Nothing compares to Bobbi’s Hummus. I order it by the case. It’s THAT good.
Bobbi’s Hummus is the ABSOLUTE best. All fresh ingredients, no preservatives. Eat it right out of the tub! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO COMPARISON!!! Thanks Bobbi.
I’m eating Bobbi’s hummus right now and its truly the best ive ever had. Almost tastes like garlicky mashed potatoes because its sooo creamy. Any idea where I can order a case? It’s $7.00 at my local food co op.
Isn’t the best kind of hummus the type you make fresh at home? 2 cans of chickpeas, some garlic, lemon juice, tahini and you’re good to go!
I was a huge Sabra hummus fan and will continue to buy their products…But Bobbi’s hummus just rocks. I just had some with crackers and I had to control myself to stop eating! Of course I will smell like garlic for a week, but it’s SO worth it!
I agree Bobbi’s is for real hummus lovers!
Sabras is good tasting but way over processed and with too many additives. Its more for people being introduced to hummus or those who are not into the natural more homecooked taste.
Bobbis is the best thing next to making it at home
AND for the home recipe Way better than “canned beans” is the dry ones. Just soak them for a day or two and you are good to go and you have raw hummus. You can do it without soaking too and just add more water.
Sabra Is the worst hummus you could eat from a health point of view , it is Hummus mayonnaise , all that mouth feel and smooth texture comes from the loads of oil whipped in it .
If you leave your sabra container outside the fridge for a couple of hours it will collapse just like whipped cream.
It is loaded with MSG , The MSG in order to be listed on the food label has to be 99% pure MSG if it is 98.9% it will not be listed as such , the MSG is hidden in “seasonings” and ” natural flavor” and that is where the phrase ” I am addicted to sabra” comes from , also if you really taste sabra you will notice an Umami or savory beef taste that is absent in real hummus and a clear sign of the MSG , enjoy.
MSG is useful in this case (as you couldn’t get umami from any traditional hummus ingredient), and isn’t hazardous to your health. I despise this uninformed spouting-off about the dangers of MSG that is so common among Americans. Buy some and try making vegetarian dishes with a small amount (beans, for instance; granule MSG is extremely popular in Mexico), the boost in deepness of flavor will be significant. It’s a useful tool with some terrible stigmas. There are simply some cases where using another source of umami (say, hummus — you wouldn’t want to put parmesan cheese, or mushrooms, or soy sauce, or meat in there) would foul the simple makeup of a dish.
Sabra is delicious but the best I’ve had is certainly homemade, with the freshest ingredients possible. The fat content is still there, but in olive oil instead, which is tastier — and healthier I suppose.
Best tasting and most authentic hummus is the imported Pikante brand. Give it a try if you can find it.
I thank Dan for telling us about all the MSG in the Hummus. I, like many people, suffer heart irregularies from ingesting MSG. After experiencing that with Sabra I now understand why. No wonder it tastes so great.. it’s loaded with chemicals (which is *not* as natural as the FDA claims it is)!
FYI to everybody; Monosodium Glutamate in moderation is OK for most people, but it’s cropping up everywhere just like Aspertame and causing many untraceable and subtle health problems. Be Wary!
Insanity. Anyone who thinks MSG is OK is definitely ignorant. It is slowly crept into all the foods on our supermarket shelves indeed and most of the time you don’t even know it’s in there since it goes by so many different names etc… and it is also the leading cause of obesity, and many other health problems in USA. It’s poison just like artificial sweeteners. But I guess if it is popular in Mexico (and China)- well then it’s perfectly ok and healthy LOL!!!
Bon Appetite:)
