LCD Soundsystem

Though I’m no Brooklyn Vegan, I thought I’d try my hand at a Lcd1_1concert report. Caught LCD Soundsystem at Webster Hall on Friday night. The band put on a great live show–with James Murphy getting crazy at the end, hitting the cow bell, banging on the drums and amping up the crowd even more. No Daft Punk in the house. LCD did play a Paperclip People (Carl Craig) cover, Throw, as an encore for a very cool ending.

The opening act, the Juan Maclean, was a bitJuanmclean disappointing. We stepped in right as the group started, but it seems like the band was not in the best mood, possibly due to set up or sound problems?  Whatever the issue, frontman Juan Maclean didn’t appear pleased at the crowd’s low-key response to his the short set (three songs, I think). I’d never heard them perform before but have heard it’s generally quite good. This set was loud and agressive–at one point the chaotic noise level approached what a friend described as "the sound of the apocolypse"–and I just don’t think they had a long enough set to work the crowd into it. For the last song, a clown painting was inexplicably hung from a piece of sound equipment (click on the photo for a bigger version).

    This Week’s Music Picks

The summer concerts are here (and so is the summer). From now until around mid-August, the weeks are full of free outdoor show options. We’ll try to keep you informed of what’s hot (besides this weather). R&B vocalist Lizz Wright is playing four shows…

You imply they didn’t play “Daft Punk…” They did, though, at a frenzied pace. The album version, while slower, is far more intense. I expected it to be the shining moment of the night, but it fell dim to the others, most noticeably “Yeah.” What a great way to conclude the main set.
