What Spring Brings Forth

Living in Carroll Gardens, I’m used to non-living entities popping up in gardens: Easter bunnies, twirling plastic flowers, shiny balls, statues of the Virgin Mary. But still, no amount of statuary could prepare me for what popped up in front of Julienne Catering on Clinton Street a few days ago: Someone "planted" fake mini Christmas trees–with the lights attached–in front of the cafe.

Julienne

I’m assuming it’s the crazy owner who blasts jazz music from his outdoor speakers at all hours of the day to create a perfectly uninviting environment. Now, Julienne has never been known for its good taste in outdoor decorating (the ill-used outdoor copper fire pit) or for its effective selling of food products (the bagels and muffins sit outside in the sun wrapped in plastic wrap all day), but planting fake Christmas trees takes this to a whole new level.

This place has Le Petit envy.

wow, i drive by this place every day on my way to the BQE, and always feel sorry for it having such a shitty location. i’m tempted to stop just to give them some business, but if you say they’ve been there a while maybe they’re ok. is the coffee any good?

Their coffee varies. Sometimes it’s very good, but other times it’s been sitting around for way too long. We see a lot of taxi cabs stopping by the fire hydrant to pick up coffee. I feel sorry for it too, given its location. It’s too bad they don’t really make something nice of the outdoor area. It’s small, but could be cute.

This place gives me endless hours of entertainment. They try very hard to create atmosphere and always over do it.

… and I’ll never forget the time they were giving away coookies to attract business but only made the squirrls on our block much fatter.

OK everybody. I get the picture. Try and stop by when you get a chance as the front of the place is finished. And no more fake trees. Whatever. YOU should really try the food. I buy high quality produce and provisions and always keep everything fresh. Our kitchen is spotless… I honestly do not need the front business because I have a large off-premise catering business which was featured last week in the Brooklyn Paper. http://www.go-brooklyn.com
But it is a work in progress and i believe in the
    neighborhood…
